AMD and Nvidia seem to be encountering last minute difficulties which are delaying the release of their DirectX 10 IGPs for the AMD platform. You may recall, they support PCI-Express 2.0, the HyperTransport 3.0 bus as well as these manufactures’ respective hybrid technologies (Crossfire or SLI) and are expected out in the early first quarter of 2008.
For AMD, it’s not uncommon that the Southbridge is posing a problem. The internal clock generator of the SB700 does not function correctly and it was therefore necessary to add an external one on the motherboard while waiting for the arrival of the SB710 which corrects this problem.
As for Nvidia, it’s now more like the end of January/early February for the release of the MCP78. While the MCP78S functions normally, it is slower in 3D than the RS780. This is the reason for offering a higher performance MCP78U ; however its integrated GeForce chipset poorly supports the targeted frequency with the originally planned cooling system.
MCP78 motherboardNote that for unknown reasons the release of the MCP72 aka nForce 700a which doesn’t have a graphic core was pushed back to January while it was previously expected out in November or even December. This is nothing too dramatic given that it is still preferable to wait for the B3 revision of the Phenom which will correct the TLB bug. |

AGP motherboards have indeed disappeared for several years now; however graphic cards continue to appear using this interface introduced October 1997.
PowerColor has just launched a Radeon HD 3850 512 MB AGP 8X functioning at standard frequencies: 670 MHz for the GPU and 830 MHz for GDDR3 type memory. While the Radeon HD 2400 and 2600 were already offered in AGP, this card is the first that allows comfortable play of DirectX 10 games – on the condition that you aren’t limited by other components. The great unknown concerning this ‘’nth’’ last upgrade solution is its price. The presence of a PCI-E to AGP bridge and changes to the PCB will necessarily add some additional costs. |
