Shortage of the Core 2 Duo E8000

According to information from Digitimes, there is a current shortage of Core 2 Duo E8000 processors. You may recall, this is the dual core version of the Penryn which was launched January 20th.

Normally, the 2.66 GHz E8200 should be the same price as the 2.33 GHz E6550, the 3 GHz E8400 should be equivalent to the 2.66 GHz E6750 and the 3.16 GHz E8500 should correspond to the 3 GHz E6850; however, the current lack of equilibrium between supply and demand has meant a more than 20% increase for the price of the E8000.

Some accuse Intel of deliberately organizing this shortage in order to unload stocks of E6000 which the arrival of the 45nm dual core made less attractive. According to our colleagues, we will have to wait for after the Chinese New Year, the second half of February, before deliveries of the E8000 start again and this in reduced quantities. The main criterion that will determine the supply and therefore the price will be stock levels of the E6000. So are we starting to see the effects of the lack of competition?

GeForce 8800 GS: final specs & WHQL driver

Logo NvidiaNvidia has discreetly made official the existence of the GeForce 8800 GS 384 MB. This was done not only on the page devoted to GeForce 8 specifications but also by making available its exclusive drivers, 169.32 WHQL ForceWare.

By the way, it’s appreciable that once again a company that has for a long time made unified drivers a main force in its strategy is now making available WHQL drivers that are solely destined for a single model in its current DirectX 10 line.

Moreover, we can see that definitive GPU/shader clock/memory frequencies are 550/1375/800 MHz and not 575/1438/850 MHz. You may recall, this new GeForce 8 is based on a G92 just like the GeForce 8800 GT and GTS 512 and has a reduced number of units. In comparison, it has 16 less scalar processors (for a total of 96), 4 less ROPs (totaling 12) and a memory bus reduced to 192 bits. Compared to a GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB, its calculation power is 21.5% lower and memory bandwidth is 33% less.

The good news is that in France it will be found for around 170€ TTC which despite all else gives it an interesting performance/price ratio.
