Coolaler.com has published the names and confirmed the specifications of the first 5 dual core mobile Penryns.
On the very high end, the Core 2 Extreme X9000 set at 2.8 GHz will replace the X7900. While the frequency doesn’t change, L2 cache increases from 4 to 6 MB and the CPU of course gains from Penryn improvements. Its TDP should be around 44W and the price is $851 for orders of a thousand units.
More affordable are the Core 2 Duo T9500 (2.6 GHz) and T9300 (2.5 GHz), which should also offer first rate performances because they also have an L2 cache of 6 MB. As for the T8300 (2.4 GHz) and T8100 (2.1 GHz), they are equipped with an L2 cache of 3 MB. Their TDP will be 35W.
All will function with the current FSB 800 MHz as is required by the Santa Rosa platform and are expected out in January.

Fujitsu has unveiled a new series of hard drives for laptops called the MHZ2 BH. No less than seven models are planned with capacities of 40, 80, 120, 160, 200, 250 and 320 GB. Of course, these are in 2"1/2 format and have a standard height (9.5mm) leading us to believe they contain two platters.
There is a rotation speed of 5400 tpm, SATA-II type interface (3.0 Gbits /s), 8MB cache, and access time in reading/writing is a respective 12 and 14ms with an average power consumption of 1.9 Watt in these operations. Finally, sound levels are at 24dBA in stand-by. In short, only the density and interface have evolved compared to the MHY2 BH which maxed out at 250 GB.
Availability is planned for February 2008 and its creator hopes to sell as many as 20 million. You may recall however that Fujitsu is simply catching up with Toshiba which should offer another 320 GB 2"1/2 format drive, the MK3252GSX this month. |

The American memory manufacturer Micron has announced its arrival on the SSD (solid state drive) market. This means they will be competing with Samsung, SanDisk, Transcend and PNY to name just a few.
There are three types of products planned:
RealSSD Solid State Drives in 1.8" and 2" ½ formats. They will be offered with capacities of 8, 16, 32 and 64 GB with an SATA-II type interface. Reading and writing speeds were announced at 75 and 35 MB /s, respectively and power consumption will vary between 1.5 and 2 Watts. Availability is planned for the first quarter of 2008.
RealSSD Embedded USB which can be plugged into an internal USB 2.0 connector. Capacities will be from 1 to 8 GB and reading/writing speeds will be 33 and 23 MB /s. These products should arrive before the end of this year.
RealSSD Modules with at least an original size of 25x133.5x4 mm. Destined for servers, they will have an SATA interface. No other details were given.
While only the RealSSD Solid State Drives may represent a minimum of interest for most common mortals, there was no information on prices. With Intel and Seagate also soon planning on getting into the SSD market, we are betting these will become a little more affordable in 2008.
