An unusual motherboard is about to be release in Japan. The SuperMicro P8SAA+ is a motherboard based on the i925XE chipset and equipped with two PCI Express x16 slots. The first slot is branched in x16 (4 GB/s) and the second one in x4 (1 GB/s). As all PCI Express chipset lanes are used, the motherboard doesn’t have any additional PCI Express slots.

SuperMicro was already the first to release an NVIDIA’s SLI compatible motherboard. It was a bi-Xeon motherboard based on the chipset E7525 and equipped with two PCI-E x16 slots branched in x16 and x4. Performances of this type of platform should be lower than the nForce 4. Now we will have to wait and see if the P8SAA+ does provide lower performances. The P8SAA+ will be released mid December in Japan. The price: 35000 Yens so approximately $342.

LG-Philips joint-venture managers are expecting 10 to 20% LCD screens price cuts during the first quarter 2005. This price reduction would follow the 25% price cut already observed during the fourth quarter 2004.

     950, 900 and 850 Watts power supplies

Several new SNE power supplies have been recently released in Japan. These ATX power supplies are able to reach peak power outputs of 950, 900 and 850 watts and 750, 700 and 650 watts continuously.

These power supplies main interest is that they are equipped with four +12V rails providing 60 amperes in total (12A, 18A, 18A and 12A for the +12V1, +12V2, +12V3 and +12V4). These power supplies’ differences are on the +5V and +3.3V rails level. The +12V rails repartition is made between the following connectors:

    +12V1: 12V 8 pins connector, 12V 4 pins
    +12V2: 12V 8 pins connector, 4 SATA 5 pins connector
    +12V3: ATX 24 pins connector
+12V4 : seven 4 pins Molex connectors and two 4 pins Floppy connectors

What is the interest of such a high power on a non redundant ATX power supply? Well we are still looking for the answer, because even a dual processor work station with a heavy configuration doesn’t need such a high power and actually polar bears hope that they never will. Prices: 58980, 48980 and 43890 Yens, so approximately $572, $475, $426.

Two die for a Socket 775 (update)

A few days ago, a weird auction started on Ebay. It isn’t the 'Virgin Mary' toast, but an Intel processor equipped with two silicon dies on a single Socket 775 platform.

Is it true or false? Hard to tell, and it isn’t even possible to see here the future dual core Pentium 4 design, as we know that many mutant processors, escaped from Intel’s laboratory, will never be in shops.

This type of processor would reduce Intel’s first dual-core Pentium 4 development cycle, but releasing a dual core processor with two separated dies at a time when AMD will have dual core processors on a single die won’t strengthen Intel’s intended position as technological leader.

Update: This is a actually a fake sale by auction. The picture is also a fake. The person who initiated this auction indicates that he did this to see how fast the information would circulate on internet. Well it has circulated quite fast!

6 and 7 megapixels in a mobile phone

Samsung announced a few weeks ago the first 5 megapixels mobile phone (see this news). Today, Telecoms Korea reported on their website that LG was about to release during the first half 2005 (at least in Asia) two new 6 and 7 megapixels mobile phones.

Telecoms Korea precised that if Samsung chose Pentax for their 5 megapixels sensor, LG would work with Canon.
