Samsung has just announced its new range of hard drive the SpinPoint F3. After having been used in the EcoGreens, the 500 GB platters are now being used in these drives that function at 7200 rpm. Available as of now in the 500 GB version, the SpinPoint F3 1 TB will arrive next month but we don’t yet know if Samsung will go beyond this: the SpinPoint F1 had a 3 platter design for its 1 TB version. The SpinPoint F3s will be available in versions with 16 and 32 MB of cache.
Note that Seagate has gone the same way with its Barracuda 7200.12, that is still limited to 1 TB in spite of using 500 GB platters, while the 7200.11 used up to four 375 GB platters for a maximum capacity of 1.5 GB. Both manufacturers offer higher capacities – 1.5 TB from Samsung and 2 TB from Seagate – with their EcoGreen and Barracuda LP ranges at 5400 rpm and 5900 rpm. |
