AMD has recently informed its partners that it was taking final orders for the Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 89W and 6400+ Black Edition in the first quarter of 2008. The 5600+ and 6000+ 125W can be ordered up until the end of March.

Lower down the line, the 4000+ and 4200+ are currently at the end of their product life. Nevertheless, a new version of the 4600+ should be launched at in the second quarter which theoretically will be based on a Brisbane 65nm core.

In the end of the second quarter, the firm will also offer an Athlon 6050 and 6250. Based on the "Kuma" core which is a version of the dual-core "Barcelona", it will have 2x512KB of L2 cache and 1 MB of L3 cache. No information has yet been given on their frequencies.

Upcoming price reduction of the GeForce 8800 GT

According to Digitimes, Nvidia has recently asked its partners to reduce the number of layers in PCBs used for the GeForce 8800 GT from 10 to 6. The purpose is to decrease production costs by around 10 dollars which will also lower the final sales price.

Although it has lower performances, the less expensive Radeon HD 3800 has an interesting performance/price ratio and has allowed AMD to gain market shares in a very profitable segment. Nvidia is therefore looking to make its card more attractive by cutting costs with graphic card manufacturers. However, the latter in turn are not too enthusiastic about the absence of efforts in terms of chip prices given that Nvidia is trying to keep its profit margin as high as possible.

The Californian firm was obviously taken by surprise with the Radeon HD 3800 because they moved up the launch date of the GeForce 8800 GT without having adequate stocks. This has meant a rare low availability for

The rumor now seems to be confirmed that Nvidia is planning on launching a GeForce 8800 GS in the next few weeks. The new GeForce 8 is based on a G92 just like the GeForce 8800 GT and GTS 512; however it aims for the lower 170-180€ segment with a smaller number of units. This lesser version of the GeForce 8800 GT will lose 16 scalar processors (for a total of 96) and 4 ROPs (leaving 12) and of course related memory access. Bus memory will therefore be reduced to 192 bits.

According to Hardspell, all of this will be tied to frequencies of 575/1438/850 MHz which means 18% less calculation power and 30% less memory bandwidth compared to the GeForce 8800 GT.

Either way, these cards equipped with 384 MB of memory won’t have a long product life because according to our information there will only be one batch (of more or less 100,000 cards) reserved for Asus, EVGA and XFX while waiting for the GeForce 9600.
