InPhase announced to have broken a new density record for holographic storage technology. The manufacturer says to have reached 64,375 GB per square inch. It would allow the storage on a media of the size of a CD or DVD of approximately 400 GB of data or 7.4 times more than the most advanced version of a dual layer blu-ray media.

InPhase will deliver the industry’s first holographic drive and media at the end of 2006. The first generation drive will be build by Hitachi Maxell, will be intended for data archives and have a capacity of 300 gigabytes on a single 130 mm disk with a 20 megabyte per second transfer rate

Transfer rates are currently low and it isn't possible to think of them to replace our hard drives. As a comparison, hard drive manufacturers' objective us to reach in 2010, 62.5 GB / inch² with perpendicular recording technology and two times more 5 years later by using patterned media and/or thermally assisted recording.
