AMD is reported to be launching a new card, the Radeon HD 4850 on 21 October. Positioned between the 4850 (150 €) and the 4670 (75 €), it will compete with the 8800 GT, currently priced around the €130 mark. As its name indicates, it is derived from the 4870/4850, and will contain a RV770.
Of the 10 blocks of units in the chip however, only 8 will be active, allowing AMD to recycle any partially defective RV770s. There will therefore be 128 Vec5 units on the Radeon HD 4830, compared to 160 on the Radeon HD 4850/4870 and 64 on the HD 4670. With GDDR3 memory on a 256 bit bus, we don’t yet know what the frequencies are. |
