According to HKEPC, Intel will release the i945 chipset and Pentium D processors next May 26. The i945 chipset and Pentium D are the more affordable versions of the i955X and Pentium Extreme Edition.

Based on the same design, the Pentium D are like the Pentium EE dual core processors but without HyperThreading. They will be released in 800, 820 and 840 versions clocked at 2.8, 3.0 and 3.2 GHz and will cost respectively $240, $315 and $530.

The i945P and i945G (with and without integrated graphic solution) will support like the i955X, the FSB1066 and dual channel DDR2-667, but won’t be able to work with a Pentium EE. They won’t of course officially feature the HyperPath mode to have better latencies at the memory controller level. We can however count on the motherboard makers to activate it like with the i865PE i915P.

AMD quad core ES in 2007

In an interview given to CRN, Hector Ruiz AMD CEO said that he was expecting to see the first AMD quad core processors in 2007. It would be engineering samples and not sales products. So, we can say without taking too many risks that such processors could be available in shops by 2008. This information tends to confirm the multi core as the future of x86 processors.

Now if a quad core processor will be fully exploited by a server / workstation, we have to hope that multithreaded software for general public will break through to have a minimum of interest compared to dual core processors already strongly restricted by software support in certain areas.

For the last decade, Sony’s position was: we are right and everybody else is wrong. Because of this position they have missed the MP3 format, and place all their hopes in the OLED at a time when LCD monitors sales were extremely dynamic. This policy only lasted a time. The Japanese giant has finally signed last year an agreement with Samsung to open together a panel production factory. This factory has just started its production. It is the biggest factory of this type according to the participants. It is also the first one to produce 7th generation panels. 1000 units are currently produced per months with an equal repartition for Sony and Samsung. It will be initially panels for quite wide TVs (26, 32 and 40” diagonal).

LG-Philips should also announce soon the beginning of production of their 7th generation panel factory.
