When the 5870 was announced, ATI introduced the 5870 EyeFinity Edition at the same time, allowing for piloting of up to six screens simultaneously. Almost 6 months after the announcement however, the card still isn’t out, which did lead some to think it may just have been a paper launch.
This isn’t the case however and ATI will officially bring out the card on March 11th. It will differ from the standard 5870 on several points. The first is of course video outs: 6 outs in mini-DisplayPort format (used in particular by Apple) will be presented, along with a fair few adaptors. There are likely to be two mini DisplayPort to DisplayPorts, two mini DisplayPort to DVIs (no DVI Dual Link however) and a mini DisplayPort to HDMI. Note that you won’t be able to use two adaptors to DVI and the HDMI adaptor at the same time.
The second difference concerns the amount of memory, which will go up from 1 GB on the 5870s to 2 GB for the 5870 EyeFinity edition. In very high resolution, with filters activated, the 5870 Eyefinity should then give slightly better performance than the standard 5870. The TDP is also likely to be up on the standard 5870s, with 228W instead of 188W.
