If 6600 GT or even 6800 graphic cards with passive cooling system exist (Gigabyte has released several products), we have to say that they generally need very good tower ventilations. In our last survey we measured 100°C GPU temperature in use. This temperature is quite high even if it isn’t considered as critical by NVIDIA.
Aware of this problem, ASUSTeK intends to release within a month the N6600GT Silencer. This GeForce 6600 GT with 256 MB of GDDR3 memory will feature a passive cooling system with a wider (and adjustable on 360° for the bigger part) dissipation surface than competing products. This system would keep the GPU around 70°C. The only problem is the price around 240€. This is quite expensive for a 6600 GT even if it is equipped with a passive cooling system. Have you ever heard that silence is golden? |

It is summer and we test digital cameras. Eleven products in this survey are thin with metal body. Ten of them are 5 megapixels with 3X zoom and one is an 8 megapixels (it has been included it for comparison). 8 of them have 6.4 cm diagonal monitors, the thinner is 1.5 cm thick and one has an optical stabilizing device (!).
Cameras tested are: Acer CR-8530 and CS-5530, Canon Ixus 50 / SD400, Casio EX-S500, Fujifilm Finepix Z1, Kodak ES-V550, Konica Minolta Dimage X60, Nikon Coolpix S1, Olympus FE-5500 / D-630, Panasonic DMC-FX8, Sony DSC-T7.
Are studied the noise level increase, quality without flash, speed, video mode...

Intel should release today the Pentium M 780. Already available in Japan, this processor is clocked at 2.26 GHz and has a 533 MHz FSB like all Pentium M Processors. This processor will be released at $637, the Pentium M 770/765 (2.13 GHz 533 MHz FSB / 2.1 GHz 400 MHz FSB) price so far. The Pentium M will cost now $423, the price of the previous 760/755 versions (2 GHz 533MHz FSB/2GHz 400 MHz FSB), and so on... |

At least, after years of waiting, HP has released the first general public inkjet printer, the Photosmart 8250, with separated cartridges. Be aware though it is quite expensive: 199€. We feel however by looking at the product that this price is justified. The 8250 really is a new kind of printer. It is for us the first HP printer with low ink consumption. The cost for one print with the photo pack (6 cartridges + 150 pages) is 27 cents, instead of 73 cents (!) with the monobloc ink cartridges (including the photo) Photosmart printers. If the cost per page is so drastically reduced, HP could take to Canon the most economical manufacturer title. According to the characteristics it is at least the fastest: 32 ppm for text, 14 seconds per photos.
Last but not least particularity, this printer has an ink recycling system for ink ejected during cleaning cycles. If ink ends up wasted for other printers, it is recycled with the 8250 and then re-injected in the right cartridge. No more ink will be wasted.
This technological marvel will hit the market next August 18 for an MSRP of €199. |
