6800 Ultra 512 Mo in SLI

At the time when rumours mentioned the imminent release of a 3D graphic card 512 MB « gamers » by ATI, Gainward has decided to make the first move and preannounce the Gainward CoolFX PowerPack! Ultra/2800 PCX "Golden Sample" graphic cards.

These graphic cards feature a GeForce 6800 Ultra clocked at 450 MHz, 512 MB memory clocked at 600 MHz (instead of 425/550 for a standard 6800 Ultra PCI-E) and the CoolFX cooling system. They will be sold separately and by pair for the SLI.

Gainward mentioned the product availability end of March and also said that a less “expensive version” with a standard cooling system will also be available. We haven’t found any information on prices, but our guess is that it will be over 1000€ per CoolFX graphic cards. Ouch!

     Corsair releases less expensive XPERT

Corsair releases less expensive but also slower new XPERT memory modules. Instead of 2-2-2, the timing changes to 2-3-3 for Intel platform and 2.5-3-3 for AMD platform. The TwinXP1024-3200C2 pack includes two 512 MB memory modules. It should be a lot less expensive than the TwinXP1024-3200XL pack, but still have the same functionalities.

But the thing is that if it is still 40% more expensive than the C2 Pro version (this is the price gap between the XL Pro and XPERT), the problem will still be the same…

     OCZ releases PC4000 2-2-2

OCZ today announced new memory modules, the EL DDR PC-4000 Gold VX. Available in 512 MB version, this memory module is certified to function at 250MHz with timings of 2-2-2. It is however important to put this figure in perspective as this memory module require 3.3V. This figure is a lot superior to the 2.5V norm for the DDR.

OCZ certifies this memory module for this voltage and species that it is also able to run at 3.5V. Of course to reach such a voltage it is imperative to modify the motherboard or use a DDR Booster also manufactured by OCZ.

The Rialto is on its way

According to The Inquirer, ATI is just about to release the Rialto chip, a PCI Express to AGP bridge.

The Rialto is apparently already finished and in production. So it means that we can expect the release of the X800/X800 XL AGP in March. The X700/Pro AGP will be out in April. Now we will have to wait and see if ATI will be able to stick to this schedule…

     X850 512 MB soon ?

Logo sphère ATIATI will release during the Texas Gaming Festival, a new high end graphic card which specificity is to feature 512 MB of video memory. It is important to specify, however, that this isn’t a first. NVIDIA released last summer the Quadro FX 4400, based on the NV45 (6800 Ultra) and which also features 512 MB of video memory. Moreover, if 512 MB is interesting for 3D professionals, for games so much memory is for the moment completely useless and should remain useless for quite a while….

According to Computerbase, the NVIDIA chipset C19 for Intel platform won’t be named nForce 5, but nForce 4 Intel Edition. Available in SLI or non SLI version, these chipset will support FSB1066 and DDR2-667, and will also feature a Southbridge which will support 10 USB 2.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet + NVIDIA FireWall, 4 ATA peripherals and 4 SATA/II peripherals. We are expecting this chipset in Q2.

     SiS to provoke arguments

SiS just made a rather surprising press release. The manufacturer announced that the chipset SiS 756 is currently the Only Chipset supporting PCI Express x 16 and HyperTransport 1G for AMD64 Platform. It also announced that some chipsets on the market could only handle 8 of their 16 PCI express lanes and could not reach HyperTransport speed at 1GHz.

We have noticed the very useful « Registered to SiS+765+965 » ...

It is hard to tell which products SiS targets. We know that if the nForce 4x bus is restricted at HT 800 MHz, the other versions aren’t and the K8T890 bus isn’t restricted either. VIA and AMD chipsets supports PCI Express x16 and only the nForce 4 SLI features a x8 bus in SLI mode. Anyway, it could be useful that SiS supports its allegation…

Last February 16, NVIDIA announced that the Company shipped more than one million NVIDIA chipsets nForce4. The next day, SiS announced to have shipped 2 millions of PCI Express chipsets, Intel and AMD platform included. Today, VIA announced to have shipped 100 millions chipsets for AMD platform. This collaboration started in 1994 with a chipset compatible with the processor Am486DX 40. Now we are waiting for Intel’s announcement…
