At the time when rumours mentioned the imminent release of a 3D graphic card 512 MB « gamers » by ATI, Gainward has decided to make the first move and preannounce the Gainward CoolFX PowerPack! Ultra/2800 PCX "Golden Sample" graphic cards.
These graphic cards feature a GeForce 6800 Ultra clocked at 450 MHz, 512 MB memory clocked at 600 MHz (instead of 425/550 for a standard 6800 Ultra PCI-E) and the CoolFX cooling system. They will be sold separately and by pair for the SLI.
Gainward mentioned the product availability end of March and also said that a less “expensive version” with a standard cooling system will also be available. We haven’t found any information on prices, but our guess is that it will be over 1000€ per CoolFX graphic cards. Ouch! |

ATI will release during the Texas Gaming Festival, a new high end graphic card which specificity is to feature 512 MB of video memory. It is important to specify, however, that this isn’t a first. NVIDIA released last summer the Quadro FX 4400, based on the NV45 (6800 Ultra) and which also features 512 MB of video memory. Moreover, if 512 MB is interesting for 3D professionals, for games so much memory is for the moment completely useless and should remain useless for quite a while….
