VR-Zone has published details on 45nm Core 2 processors, code named Penryn, which will be launched in mobile versions. This will start with 5 models in the first quarter which will be compatible with the current Santa Rosa platform and will include 2.1 and 2.3 GHz versions equipped with 3 MB of L2 and 2.5 and 2.6 GHz versions with 6 MB of L2. You may have noticed that frequencies have not increased and the TDP remains at the current 35W. An « Extreme » model will also be launched running at the current X7900’s frequency of 2.8 GHz and a TDP of 44W.

In the second quarter, six other models will follow destined for the Montevina platform. This will include three versions with an L2 cache of 3 MB and a 25W TDP set at 2.1, 2.4 and 2.53 GHz, as well as three others with 6 MB and a TDP of 35W which will run at 2.53, 2.8 GHz and 3.06 GHz. This gain in frequency compared to the current line will be accomplished without higher power consumption, as TDP is announced at 35W for the 2.8 GHz version (which will remain in the classic line) and 44W for its big brother, an Extreme.

The Montevina platform will differ from the current Santa Rosa with its DDR3 support and also the transition from FSB800 to FSB1066.

One 2407WFP-HC in France equals two in the US!

Two months after its arrival in Japan, Dell has decided to launch its new 24", the 2407WFP-HC, in France. The main difference compared to the previous model is the replacement of CCFL backlights by new « wide gamut » versions. Response time stays at 6ms on a PVA panel (build by Samsung).

The only problem is that while this screen is found for 460 € HT in Japan and 494 € (taxes not included) in the USA, or even as low as 420 € (without tax) on sale, in France Dell ungenerously announced a base price of 819 € (without VAT and 980 € with)! Can this be blamed on the tax imposed on LCD screens with DVI input?

Not really, because on the one hand this is 14% and not 64% (sic) and on the other, Dell usually assembles its screens in the European Union (Czech Republic or Hungary, for example) where this tax doesn’t apply. In short, Dell’s price strategy in France isn’t too comprehensible especially when LCD prices are falling sharply...
