     Sapphire announces a 5850 Toxic 2 GB

While the release of the GTX480s and 470s is imminent, availability of the 5850s and 5870s is slowly improving and you can now find the cards in stock in the majority of stores.

In this context Sapphire has announced its new card, the 5850 Toxic 2 GB. It is in fact a “standard” 5850 Toxic, meaning an overclocked 5850 (765MHz for the GPU as against 725Mhz for the stock GPU, 4500MHz GDDR5 as against 4000MHz GDDR5), with a Vapor-X cooler that is supposed to be high-performance and quiet. The major difference comes in terms of the memory that goes from 1 GB on the standard model to 2 GB on this model. You’ll perhaps notice this at very high resolution (with EyeFinity) with filters activated, though the use of a 5870 would seem more appropriate here…

While waiting for a hypothetical 5870 with 2 GB of memory, this 5850 Toxic 2 GB should be available as of tomorrow for €289.

European online stores are starting to list the Phenom II X6, whose release is planned for April 27.

The first surprise is the mention of a Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition. Clocked at 3.2 GHz and with a TDP of 125W, it is reported to have a 3.6 GHz "TurboCore". Pre-orders are priced at around €310.

The second model listed is a Phenom II X6 1055T, clocked at 2.8 GHz with the TurboCore at 3.3 GHz and a TDP of 125W, all for €210. To recap, AMD is also supposed to be launching versions at 2.6 GHz (1035T) and 3 GHz (1075T).

TRIM support for RAID set-ups on Intel ICH

While most SSDs on the market now offer TRIM support, it shouldn’t be forgotten that the TRIM command is disactivated with flash drives in RAID. This means that performance levels for an SSD array declines over time, which is not what you want for an upgrade that’s supposed to increase your machine’s responsiveness!

Intel announced TRIM support for RAID set-ups some time ago and this is now in effect! It has just published drivers for its RAID controllers that will allow support for the TRIM command. As long as all SSDs in an array are TRIM compatible, it should be possible to activate it. Intel does however specify that the command will not operate for RAID 5.

You can download these drivers here.
