     A date for the 890X?

Among the innovations expected shortly is the AMD 890GX chipset, the first chipset to support SATA 6.0 Gbps. This should avoid the need for recourse to external controllers with all the PCI Express lane support worries that that implies. The chipset should function with the forthcoming AMD Phenom II X6s and is likely to include a DirectX 10.1 compatible Radeon 4290.

The news is not yet official but rumour has it that the 890GX is likely to be announced on March 1st and be very much in evidence at Cebit. It is likely to be followed on April 26 by the 880G (with a Radeon 4250), then by the 890FX (no IGP) and the 870 for the mid-range.

If all this is confirmed, the 8xx range is likely to be very close to the 7xx which should then be rapidly replaced in shops.

     Overclock cards from Gigabyte

Like almost all graphics card manufacturers, Gigabyte is offering a range of cards that come already overclocked. Obviously this isn’t enough however as the brand has announced the Ultimate Super Overclock Series range. These cards represent Gigabyte’s top of the top end, the components of which are subject to a specific selection procedure.

According to Gigabyte, the GPUs used for these cards are analysed, tested and chosen after a long process. The chips are preselected by machine before being analysed to ascertain their maximum clock. After various tests, the remaining GPUs are then handpicked by Gigabyte’s engineers.

These GPUs are then tested with 3D Mark Vantage so as to get their working temperature. The GPUs that heat up least are then selected to be assembled on their PCB.

The PCB must measure up to the brand’s Ultra Durable motherboard criteria and is then mounted on an in-house cooling system that uses two fans and four heatpipes.

A very high-end series then, which will be demoed at Cebit (with a 5870) and available soon afterwards. No price has yet been given.

     GeForce GT 320, 330 and 340

NVIDIA is launching three new GeForces, the GT 320, 330 and 340. Exclusively for OEMs, these models are versions of the GeForce GT240. The GT 320 is a cut down version with only 72 of the 96 GPU stream processors activated and has 790 MHz DDR3.

The GT 330 has 96 SPs and DDR3 at 800 MHz, like some DDR3 GT 240s, while the GT 340 is coupled with 1700MHz GDDR5, like the GDDR5 GT 240. Note however that the GT330 can also be based on a G92 and is then derived from the GeForce 8/9s: it then has a 500 MHz GPU, 112 SPs at 1250 MHz and the memory can be either 256-bit or 192-bit 500 MHz DDR2.

Above and beyond the unfortunately habitual renaming, the lack of clarity on the GT330 can only be regretted as quite different cards will be available under the same reference.
