Gigabyte is apparently planning to release a new graphic card with two GPU, the 3D1-XL. The name is however misleading as it won’t be more efficient than 3D1. This graphic card will include two GeForce 6600 instead of two GeForce 6600 GT.

It seems however, that Gigabyte will reach higher frequencies than the official 6600 for the GPU and the BGA type memory (standard 6600 uses TSOP memory which reach lower frequencies). The use of two GeForce 6600 gives the possibility to change the ventilation for a single fan and reduce the global price. It will be sold $380 to $400 with the Gigabyte GA-K8N Ultra-SLI motherboard. The price gap with the motherboard alone is approximately $250.

Now we still have to find out the graphic card real frequencies to see if it will be really interesting. Indeed, two simple GeForce 6600 with official frequencies in SLI doesn’t have much interest compared to a GeForce 6800 for example.

The end of the Athlon 64 Socket 754

AMD just announced the end of the Athlon 64 Socket 754. The end of production is already planned and AMD’s clients will be able to order processors until June 15.

In shops, the Athlon 64 Socket 754 will progressively disappears and give more space to the Athlon 64 Socket 939 which will continue to offer generally a slightly inferior performance/price ratio. The 3400+ S754 is almost as expensive as the 3200+ Socket 939 which doesn’t provide better performances in practice than the costlier 3500+ Socket 939.

Of course, the Socket 754 won’t disappear as the Athlon 64 Mobile, Sempron and Turion still have this format.
