NVIDIA released new ForceWare WHQL drivers, the 84.21. They are the first WHQL certified drivers that support H.264 decoding acceleration and the latest GeForce 7600/7900 cards. We also noted the correction of a bug under FEAR that seriously impacted performances in FSAA.
With a 7800 GTX 512 MB, the framerate increases from 31 to 39 in 1600*1200 and from 22 to 29 in 1920*1440 (AA 4x for both cases). Better late than never!
After Tom’s (see this news), HKEPC has tested the Socket AM2 and compared an Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Socket 939 with DDR400 and timings of 2.5-3-3 to an Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Socket AM2 with DDR2-800 and timings of 5-5-5.
Once more, results are very much similar between the two Sockets whether if it is for applicative or synthetic performances such as memory test bandwidth, which is rather curious.
Is it a specific problem of the Socket AM2? A bios issue of the first motherboards? Only the future will tell us and we can't wait to test the final version. Even if we aren't expecting a miracle of the change to DDR2 for Athlon 64, a minimum performance gain would be more than welcome!
