IBM has announced having signed a deal with Toshiba to continue joint development of the 32nm production process. The two firms have already been collaborating in this area since December 2005 and this new accord simply reinforces their partnership.
Toshiba therefore officially joins the IBM Alliance for 32nm bulk CMOS process technology development which also includes AMD, Chartered Semiconductor, Freescale, Infineon and Samsung. Moreover, you may recall that Toshiba already works with NEC on the 32nm.
Some suggest that this more involves buying the technology from IBM rather than an actual partnership, which in the end is much less expensive. On the other hand, in the case of AMD, for example, 70 of its employees are permanent fixtures in IBM’s facilities. Under these conditions, it’s hard to imagine that there is a simple license involved even if AMD also has to give cash to Big Blue. The truth is out there somewhere... |

In addition to yesterday’s price reductions, today AMD launches the Phenom 9600 Black Edition.
Like all Black Edition processors, its sets itself apart with an unblocked multiplying coefficient and is therefore more apt for overclocking. For the rest, it is identical to the Phenom 9600 at 2.3 GHz, a TDP of 95 Watts and price of $247 for orders of 1000. We will just have to see if in actuality the two processors will be sold for the same price. Either way, it’s better to wait for the future B3 revision which will correct the TLB bug. |
