     Intel RD600 & nForce 590 in October

    Logo NvidiaOctober will finally be the release date of the new ATI and NVIDIA chipsets for Intel platform and to be more specific for Core 2 Duo: RD600 and nForce 590 SLI. NVIDIA will apparently be the first to release a chip as ASUSTeK expects the first shipments at the beginning of the month.

    Announced during the Computex, the nForce 590 SLI includes 48 PCI Express lines, 6 SATA ports, 2 Gigabit networks ports and support 1066FSB and DDR2-667. Initially scheduled at the end of July, it has been so much delayed that for now we have to use an nForce 4 SLI Intel Edition to have two cards in SLI with a Core 2 Duo.

    In practice, there are not many differences as the Northbridge are the same! The two also have the same unpleasant tendency to have a low FSB overclocking capacity compared to Intel's chipsets.

    Logo sphère ATIThe RD600 initially scheduled at the beginning of the year and postponed several times will probably be better for Overclocking. ATI said that it will support FSB1333 and that it could reach 375 MHz (FSB1500) in overclocking (this was said three month ago). Even more interesting, it would be possible to adjust asynchronously the FSB and memory speed. Beside these points, it will of course be possible to have two 16X cabled PCI-E port. The SB600 has, however, modest characteristics (no Gigabit Ethernet for example, 4 SATA ports).

    Now, the thing is that these chipsets won't last long. NVIDIA already seems to focus on the successor of the nForce 590 SLI, which will use a new Northbridge the C55 (scheduled before the end of the year) and ATI will simply stop the production of chipsets for Intel platforms after the RD600. This is the reason why some of the motherboards manufacturers are rather cautious about the release of a mobo S775 based on ATI chipset.



     Toshiba to recall 340.000 batteries

    After Apple and Dell, Toshiba recalls approximately 340.000 batteries. Like Apple and Dell, these batteries were actually produced by Sony. Toshiba indicates however that batteries concerned shouldn’t overheat and possibly pose a risk of fire but rather be in a few rare cases at the origin of failures independently of how they are used.

    The irony is that the website of the manufacturer only laconically mentions that Toshiba has found "no evidence that the problem reported by Dell and Apple in their recalls applies to our notebook PCs" probably forgetting the 340.000 batteries.

    Last but not least, the recent incident of an IBM laptop user in an airport let us believe that other manufacturers might follow Toshiba's example in a near future.



     +10.5% PC units in 2006 but ...

    According to the Gartner institute, the number of computer sold in 2006 will be of 234 million or +10.5%. Sales will however drop by 2.5% to $198 billion. The average price of a computer will consequently reduce to $845 from $935. The Gartner instituted hasn't however specified whether if it is a global price reduction or if it is only du to the growth of computer sales in emerging countries.

    We remind you that IDC announced 12.6% sales increase during the first quarter 2006.



     X1950 Pro and X1650 XT in a month

    According to HKEPC, ATI will release the Radeon X1950 Pro and X1650 XT next October 17.

    The X1950 Pro will use a new 80nm chip named RV570. Like the X1900 GT, it will have 36 pixel shading units, 12 ROPs but it will be higher clocked 600/700 MHz as compared to 575/600 or 512/660 for the X1900 GT. The other innovation is that the chip will natively support the CrossFire via a composting engine. A specific card or using the inefficient software CrossFire via the PCI Express will no longer be a necessity!


    The RV560 will be included in the Radeon X1650 XT. This 80nm GPU will have 24 pixel shading units and 8 ROPs instead of 12 and 4 for the RV530 and RV535 of the X1600 and X1650 Pro. This additional power will finally help ATI to have an interesting product to compete with the 7600. Here again, the CrossFire will be natively supported.

    Prices will vary from $200 to $250 for the X1950 Pro and from $170 to $200 for the X1650 XT.



     Soon an 80nm 7650 GS

    At the end of last week, NVIDIA announced to be the first to release an 80nm GPU. Manufactured by TSMC and only dedicated at first to ASUSTeK A8Js laptops, the GeForce Go 7700 features 12 pixel shading pipelines and 5 vertex shading units like a GeForce 7600 (the GeForce Go 7600 however only included 8 pixel shading pipelines like the GeForce 6600).

    80nm fabrication process won't be only dedicated to laptops. According to Digitimes, NVIDIA will release by the end of the month the G73-B1. Also manufactured by TSMC, this GPU will be found on the future GeForce 7650 GS which performances will be half way between a 7600 GS and a 7600 GT.
