Dell, who so far was only selling computers based on Intel processors, has just announced that they will be using AMD processors. Sales volumes won’t however be huge because only it only concerns the Opteron and four-processor server lines.
The Opteron is indeed very competitive for this type of machines because of the low power consumption and HyperTransport architecture, but this decision might seem a little surprising. During the first quarter 2006, AMD reached 26% market shares for sever as compared to 16.4% during the last quarter 2005.
It is important to point out that this announcement concord with results considered as being disappointing by financial analysts. Indeed, despite 6% sales increase to reach $14,216 billion, the number one of computer sales announced 18% drop net profit at 762 million. It corresponds in the end to 5.36% net profit margin. |
