     The AMD 780G & 740G in January

AMD's 780G and 740G chipsets should be released in the month of January. While the first will have the latest innovations (HT 3.0, PCI-E 2.0, UVD, and DisplayPort), be Hybrid Crossfire compatible and have a graphic core which supports DirectX 10, its smaller sibling will be limited to DirectX 9. This is significant compared to the current 690G which is still equipped with a half Radeon X700 and pixel shader 2.0b. We should therefore have a derivative of R500 architecture supporting pixel shader 3.0 on our hands. Either way, given the minimal performance of IGPs, we shouldn’t expect too much more. Now we will just have to see how it fares compared to Nvidia’s MCP7x.

After the high end Core 2 Extreme, Quad, and Duo and the dual core Celeron, there is now information about the release of the upcoming Core 2 Duo mid-range. Two models are expected out in the first quarter of 2008: an E4700 set at 2.6 GHz which will still have an FSB 800 MHz and 2 MB of L2 cache priced at $133 (the current price of the E4500) and another engraved in 45 nm, whose frequency, price and numbering have not yet been revealed. It will nevertheless include an FSB 1066 MHz and L2 cache of 3 MB. With a little luck, we could also learn about future Pentiums next week...

     Good-bye HD 2950 Pro, hello HD 3800?

According to VR-Zone, the commercial name of the RV670 could be the Radeon HD 3800. Up until now, it was supposed to be the Radeon HD 2950 Pro, even if it was recently announced that this could change. The fact that GeCube once quickly listed a Radeon HD 3800 is still proven by Googleing.

Also, Asian colleagues have mentioned that the current endings (Pro, XT, GT, XTX) will be abandoned for a more precise numbering system such as the Radeon HD 3850, 3870, etc...

     Intel: a good 3rd quarter

Intel has just published its financial results for the third quarter of 2007. The firm is still in great health because its revenue grew both compared to last year and the previous quarter. The below figures are in millions of dollars.

It’s no surprise they attribute the gross profit increase of 52.4% to the quality of their products as well as growing world demand. In terms of microprocessors, while the average sales price remains stable, the number of units sold was a new record. Proof of this is the 2 million quad-core processors sold throughout the quarter. Also, chipset and flash memory sales were never as high, even if the California giant continues to lose money in the latter division which will soon break away from the parent company.

As for the geographical distribution of its revenue, the slow erosion continues in the US with only 20% of the total, a decrease of 1%. Europe now counts for 18% (+1%), Japan for 10% (-1%) and the Asia-Pacific zone for 52% (+1%).

     Western: 3 TB in 2010?

The hard drive sometime strangely resembles that of high end RAM with its wave of press releases containing phrases like, the industry's highest demonstrated and In a world first. However, the only difference is that the announced innovations can be followed by product releases roughly 3 years later.

After Fujitsu and Hitachi, it’s now Western Digital that announced at the Perpendicular Magnetic Recording Conference currently taking place in Tokyo, that they were able to conduct a demonstration of a hard drive which attains a density of 65 GB per inch² thanks to a head based on tunneling magneto-resistive (TMR) technology. This will enable the firm to offer 3" 1/2 hard drives with a capacity of 3 TB in 2010. In short, it’s something that brings them back into the race and reassures investors without overshadowing Hitachi who should come out with its 4 TB the following year.
