AMD has released the ATI Catalyst 7.4 drivers for Windows Vista, XP and Linux. If users of windows XP will only notice a couple of issues corrected, users of windows Vista will be pleased to see significant performance improvements in OpenGL.

The performance improvements of the Radeon X1000, with mono card or CrossFire configurations are generally of 15% with Doom3, Quake 4 and Prey, with peaks of up to 30%. In fact, these performance improvements fill the gaps between XP and Vista. The Avivo Video Converter is now available for Vista 32 bit edition

For Linux, the control center arrives in beta 0.9 version and includes a French version. To download the drivers, go to this page!

Intel has officially unveiled at IDF the performances of the future Penryn processor using the 45 nm fabrication process. The figures published correspond to the dual core and quad core at 3.33 GHz with FSB1333 and they are compared to the QX6800 at 2.93 GHz with FSB1066. Here are the performance improvements announced by Intel for the Quad Core:

    - 3DMark06 CPU: +21.8%
    - Mainconcept H.264 Encoder: +21.9%
    - Cinebench R9.5: +24.9%
    - Cinebench R10 Beta: +25.5%
    - Half Life 2 Lost Coast: +37.3%
    - DiVX 6.6 Alpha / Vdub 1.7.1: +111%

Even if these figures are to be taken with a pinch of salt, considering that the frequency increase is of 13.5%, improvements are interesting. They are due to the L2 cache size increase but also to other optimizations, especially the SSE4 for the DiVX score.

The test configuration was: Bad Axe2 motherboards with i975X (pre-production for the 45nm), 8800 GTX, 2x1 GB of DDR2-800 5-5-5-15. Mass production of Core 2 « Penryn » will begin at the end of the year and the entire product line release will take place end of 2007 / early 2008. The release of a few units in « Extreme Edition » in October is also something we could expect.
