Altec Lansing will release a new speaker set in June 2005. It is a first for Altec, the HMX7051 is a high end 5.1 speaker set for computer. The speaker set provide a grand total of 575 Watts, the subwoofer features a 10” membrane and the two satellites, which look very much like the MX5021’s, include one tweeter and two 3” drivers for mediums.

Several inputs will apparently be available with two numerical optical inputs, one numerical coaxial input, one main analogical input for 2/4 or 6 channels via mini jack or RCA inputs additionally to an auxiliary analogical input via mini Jack or two RCA connectors. A headphone input will also be available.

An IR remote control will be sold with the speaker set additionally to an integrated THX certified decoder which supports Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Pro Logic II Movie and Music and DTS norms. Logitech has the Z-5500, Creative the GigaWorks S750, and from June Altec will have the HMX7051. What about the price? Around 500€…which is clearly more than the 320€ of the Logitech Z-5500. Now we will have to see as soon as possible if this price gap is justified…

     Intel future prices

The Inquirer has obtained the last roadmaps sent by Intel to their partners. For future dual core processors, the Santa Clara giant keeps the same price policy than the one related in this news end of January. The price list is:

    Pentium D 840 (3.2 GHz) : 530$
    Pentium D 820 (3.0 GHz) : 315$
    Pentium D 800 (2.8 GHz) : 240$

The Pentium D 800 2.8 GHz price is just between the Pentium 4 5xx 3.2 and 3.4 GHz and the Pentium 4 6xx 3.0 and 3.2 GHz. To find the other correspondent prices you just need to add 200 MHz. The price of the Pentium Extreme Edition 840, which differs from the PD 840 by the HyperThreading compatibility, is the same that the very expensive Extreme Edition: $999. The Pentium 4 670 3.8 GHz is still expected during Q2 and will cost around $850.

We will have to wait for August for the next price cuts. At this date, the Pentium 4 670 price will be reduced to the same level that the current 660 ($605), the 660 to the level of the 650, and so on. Finally it is interesting to notice that a Celeron 351J clocked at will be released in Q2. The xx1 denomination indicates that this processor will support the EM64T. This support will be extended to other frequencies and to the Pentium 4 5xx series during the same quarter.

Intel will probably make a demonstration of the Dynamic Power Coordination technology during the IDF Japan. This function will be implemented in the future dual core Pentium M « Yonah », and will permit to automatically adjust the performance and power between the two processing cores on demand.

Several mode will be available for these processors (C0 –Running, C1- Halt, C2 - Sleep, C3 - Deep Sleep, C4 -Deeper Sleep) but within certain limitations.

The change from C3 to C4 mode, which goes along with voltage modification, won’t be possible independently. So this is when the DPC intervenes and gives access to these modes by coordinating both cores.

With this type of technology, Intel’s objective is of course to extend laptops’ autonomy despite the release of dual core processors.

These drivers are only for nForce 4 and aren’t compatible with nForce 3, 2 or 1 chips.

    The drivers include:

    - Audio driver 4.60 (WHQL)
    - Audio utilities 4.51
