     Kentsfield clocked at 2.66 GHz

We know everything (or almost everything) about Intel's future Kentfield processor: based on two Core2 dies integrated in the same packaging, this 4 cores processor is expected at the end of the year. It will be marketed as an Extreme Edition and sold at the usual $999 price. We know that we should be used to it by now, but we continue to believe that so much money for a processor is unnecessary.

Now, we know its frequency: 2.66 GHz. This isn't a big surprise but just a confirmation as test samples released several months ago were already clocked at this frequency. In order to keep a reasonable thermal envelope, the frequency isn't as high as the X6800 (2.93 GHz) or its potential successor the X6900 (3.20 GHz) which might not be released to avoid being in the future Quad Core's light.

We don't now yet how Intel will develop quad core processors in other product lines in 2007, but the Santa Clara giant could wait for the release of AMD's Quad Core to do something.

In the last roadmap, Intel has given a couple of details about Bearlake chipsets that will be the successors to the current 975 and 965 chipsets. The common denominator to the 4 versions released is the support of FSB1333 or 333 MHz Quad Pumped instead of FSB1066 today.

The first products released in Q2 2007 will be the Bearlake-P and –G. Except for the FSB1333, the manufacturer hasn't communicated any other innovation apart from for the ICH9 southbridge. We know a little bit more about the Bearlake-X and G+ to be released in Q3. Intended to replace the i975X, the first one will support PCI Express 2.0, two x16 ports (for the graphic card), and DDR3-1333. The G+ will have a DX10 graphic core and will be HDCP compatible. It will support DDR2-800 and DDR3-1066 memories.
