We know everything (or almost everything) about Intel's future Kentfield processor: based on two Core2 dies integrated in the same packaging, this 4 cores processor is expected at the end of the year. It will be marketed as an Extreme Edition and sold at the usual $999 price. We know that we should be used to it by now, but we continue to believe that so much money for a processor is unnecessary.
Now, we know its frequency: 2.66 GHz. This isn't a big surprise but just a confirmation as test samples released several months ago were already clocked at this frequency. In order to keep a reasonable thermal envelope, the frequency isn't as high as the X6800 (2.93 GHz) or its potential successor the X6900 (3.20 GHz) which might not be released to avoid being in the future Quad Core's light.
We don't now yet how Intel will develop quad core processors in other product lines in 2007, but the Santa Clara giant could wait for the release of AMD's Quad Core to do something. |
