     540 Mbps wireless connection?

The wireless world is under the influence of the 802.11n standard. This standard will be submitted for approval before the end of 2006. The last proposals coming from the WWiSE group including Airgo Networks, Bermai, Broadcom, Conexant, STMicroelectronics and Texas Instruments, are more than interesting.

The WWiSE proposal is to reach 135 Mbits /s by using two 20 MHz channels with the MIMO technology (Multiple Input Multiple Output). But that is not it, the WWiSE also provides the option to use four 40 MHz channels (where permitted), to reach 540 Mbits /s !

These figures are very promising, however we should keep in mind that the current 802.11g announced 54 Mbits /s but only reach 22 Mbits /s during the tests made on products available on the market. However, 220 Mbits /s or 27.5 MB/S could already be a great result!

     AMD: a quad-core CPU?

Mid-2005, AMD should release their first Opteron dual-core processor and in a few months a similar Athlon 64. With a 90 nm fabrication process, these processors should be the early stage of a multi core orientated strategy at AMD.

Indeed, according to the Goldman Sachs financial analysts, AMD roadmaps mentioned the possibility of a quad-core processor in 2007. It is not currently possible to know if this processor will be based on the K8 or K9 architecture.

     +50% for the AMD K8?

The first half Athlon 64 sales remained low because of a higher price. According to the manufacturers, this processor only accounted for only about 5% of the motherboard sold for this period. However with AMD’s last July price cut, the market should improve in he second half.

Motherboard manufacturers expected that unit sales of Athlon 64 (K8) processors will grow 50% sequentially in the second half of this year. Of course this market improvement should have something to do with Sempron 3100+ using the Socket 751. VIA is planning to boost shipments of its chipsets to 10% in the in the fourth quarter.
