After dual core processors, it’s the quadcore’s turn to change to FSB1333 with the arrival of the Core 2 Extreme QX6850. Similar to the Core 2 Extreme QX6800, it’s set at 3 GHz versus QX6800’s 2.93 GHz. Performances will therefore be close between these two processors and in a week their prices will also be identical at $999.
Intel thus assures its supremacy in the high end a week before a significant lowering of prices on some models. The Core 2 Quad Q6600 will see its price cut in half or $266 instead of $530, which make the quadcore more affordable. This release also accompanies the transition to stepping G0, which we should start to see at the end of the month. The change will mean a non-negligible gain in terms of power consumption with about 10 watts for a mono core and about 20 for a dual core. |
