Nick Knupffer, PR rep of Intel, recently gave some interesting clarification on the growing conflict that opposes its company against others with regards to USB 3.0. He reaffirmed the Santa Clara giant’s point of view and so the crux of the problem remains unchanged. Nvidia maintains that its rival is withholding information in order to get the jump on offering chipsets which support the next flagship PC connectivity norm.
Otherwise, an employee from the GeForce’s creator which is already working with AMD and VIA in the development of specifications for an alternative host controller, declared on condition of anonymity that SiS has joined the group. In short, there seems to be more mistrust than ever. In addition, there is the possibility that Intel’s market shares could grow even more when they already surpass that of the four other actors combined. This shouldn’t be too good for things in the short term. |

As with each launch, Nvidia’s partners are eagerly presenting ‘’their’’ new cards. Of course, all are only presenting reference models for the moment without the slightest overclocking or innovation in cooling. Otherwise, there can sometimes be a game included in the bundle. The price of the GeForce GTX 280 is around 549€-599€ taxes included while that of the GTX 260 should normally be between 309€ and 349€ with taxes.

AMD has taken advantage of the International Supercomputing Conference, which is currently taking place in Heidelberg, Germany, to launch the FireStream 9250, the first card equipped with an RV770 but deprived of video outputs because it is destined to accelerate calculation notably in the scientific and financial domains.
In terms of power, it is capable of carrying out 1 billion (10^12) floating point calculations per second in simple precision thus attaining the Teraflop. In double precision, this number is more than 200 gigaflops. It is therefore obvious that the GPU contains 800 Stream Processors or more precisely 160 "vec5 units".
Memory is consistent with the above as it is 1 GB of GDDR3. Finally, it only takes up a single slot and consumes less than 150W. Of course it will be accompanied by an SDK and will be available in the third quarter for $999. This is half the price of the FireStream 9170 (RV670 and 2 GB of GDDR3) which is still officially sold for $1999. |
