     A patent for Alienware's X2 technology

Alienware has just announced that they are going to develop a license programme for their X2 technology. The X2 technology makes possible to have two PCI Express x16 ports on a single motherboard. The Video Array technology then combines the graphic cards power to increase performances.

Alienware said that they are currently taking a patent for the X2 technology. They haven’t however mentioned the content of this patent currently inaccessible on the United States Patent and Trademark Office website. The only patent currently registered on the design of some of Alienware’s tower cases.

Even if this patent isn’t validated yet, Iwill has already signed a non-exclusive license agreement with Alienware for the X2 technology. We don’t have any additional information but there is still one question: what will be the consequences of such a patent on futures bi PCI Express x16 NVIDIA and VIA’s solutions.

Usually we don’t link our English-speaking colleague’s tests, however by looking at the amount of work made by Digit Life we had to inform you. Indeed, Digit Life has just published a Summary of 3D Tests of 101 Video Cards from the G400 to the GeForce 6800 and also including the Radeon or the Kyro II.

The only downside of this test is that it is made on performances only and that there is not a picture or a word on the graphic quality.

Also the test isn’t really interesting for recent high end graphic cards. Parameters chosen for the resolution are quite low and restrict their performances. For this test it is more interesting to take a look at the oldest graphic cards performances.
