Intel should offer no less than 15 new Penryns for the launch of the Centrino Montevina platform which should happen in May. This platform sets itself apart from the current Santa Rosa amongst other things with DDR3 support and the transition in some cases from an FSB800 to a FSB1066.

The 7 above processors are in classic BGA 35x35mm format. Note the presence of two ‘’Extreme’’ versions marked by the letter ‘’X’’. The first is of course a quad core.

These 8 other processors are in BGA 22x22mm format. The TDP of some of them is significantly less; however, this should affect their price. They are of course destined for small laptops but may also be found in SFF (small form factor) mini-PCs.

While Intel finally backed out of the One Laptop Per Child program, it is still actively working on development of the Shelton'08 platform.

The Diamondville x86 processor will be set at 1.6 GHz and its FSB will function at 533 MHz allowing a power consumption of 3.5W. An i945GSE chipset supporting DDR2 on a single channel, a WiFi 802.11g module, and an SSD USB or in-house PATA solution will complete the platform whose total consumption should be around 8W for autonomy of between 3 and 4 hours.

The launch price will vary between $300 and $500. MSI and Gigabyte have already started developing ultra portable laptops around Intel’s new solution and Dell, Hewlett-Packard and Acer should soon follow.

While performances of the Shelton'08 will be insufficient for functioning of the Windows Vista Aero interface, they should nevertheless be close to what Intel offered in the high end 3 years ago with the Centrino Sonoma (except for SSD). The Californian manufacturer will moreover offer the dual core Diamondville in the second or third quarter of 2009.
