     7900 GS in a nutshell

With the announcement of the GeForce 7900 GS, we thought it would be interesting to take look at the graphic cards on the market.

First of all, some manufacturers decided to release overclocked models which are of course most expensive even if frequencies announced can be reached by 99% of the non overclocked cards.

    - 540/750 for the Galaxy Premium 7900 GS 256/512 MB
    - 525/690 for the BFG GeForce 7900 GS OC
    - 520/700 for the Leadtek WinFast PX7900 GS TDH Extreme
    - 500/700 for the Gainward BLISS 7900GS TV DD Golden S
    - 500/690 for the eVGA e-GeForce 7900GS KO EVGA Fan
    - 480/700 for the XFX GeForce 7900 GS ExTreme
    - 475/700 for the Galaxy STD 7900 GS 256 MB / 512 MB

Some manufacturers focussed on the cooling system. We also found cards with slightly improved air cooling systems:

    - eVGA e-GeForce 7900GS EVGA Fan & KO EVGA Fan
    - Gainward BLISS 7900GS 512 TV DD & TV DD Golden S
    - Leadtek WinFast PX7900 GS TDH & TDH Extreme
    - MSI 7900GS-T2D256E
    - Twintech GeForce 7900 GS

Others chose the Zalman air solution:

    - Galaxy Premium 7900 GS 256/512 MB
    - Gigabyte GV-NX79G256DP-RH

Only one model uses a passive cooling system:

    - MSI 7900GS-T2D256EZ

HDCP is also one of the selling points :

    - Albatron 7900GS HDCP
    - eVGA e-GeForce 7900GS KO 256MB EVGA Fan HDCP
    - eVGA e-GeForce 7900GS 256MB EVGA Fan HDCP

An HDCP chip is systematically included on these products. We noted that if eVGA also sells product without HDCP chip, Albatron only has HDCP models on its website. MSI has HDCP and non HDCP cards. The presence of the chips isn’t however mentioned in the reference: you have to look at the box and a HDCP Ready logo additionally to the HDTV Ready logo present for all products. If MSI France says to only have the intention to import HDCP models, Leadtek says that cards sold are HDCP capable. This precision is a bit useless as it means that cards will be HDCP compliant if the chip is included. That is also the case of all other 7900 GS.

Some of the manufacturers make more efforts on games included in the bundle:

    - Albatron: Toca Race Driver 3
    - ASUSTeK: Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
    - Leadtek: Serious Sam 2, Spellforce 2
    - Point Of View: Tomb Raider Legend, Heroes of Might and Magic V and Ghost Recon Advanced War Fighter

Finally, there are of course cards that are exactly like the reference design and have standard frequencies:

    - Inno3D GeForce 7900 GS
    - Sparkle SP-PX79SDH 256 MB / 512 MB
    - XFX GeForce 7900 GS ExTreme

Hitachi just announced to have reached a density of 43,125 GB per square inches by using perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR). The manufacturer indicates that it is planning on releasing in 2009, 3”1/2 hard drives of 2 TB (4 platters), 2"1/2 drive of 400 GB and 1"8 drive of 200 GB (2 platters).

Up until 2016, Hitachi thinks that it will be possible to reach a density of 500 GB per square inches and that beyond this date, 12.5 TB / square inches was the next step. These long term projections shouldn’t however be taken as granted. A month ago, a representative of Hitachi announced the release this year of a 1 TB HDD. This release has finally been rescheduled to the first half 2007.
