Price of triple core Phenoms could be better

Several on-line stores, including some based in Europe, already feature the triple core Phenom on their price lists. Curiously, these are only Phenom 8x50s or in other words those that don’t have the B3 core revision. They are equipped with an L2 cache of 1.5 MB, L3 cache of 2 MB, TDP is 95W and those here come with a fan.

For the Phenom 8450 (2.1 GHz), plan on spending 137.50€, for the 8650 (2.3 GHz) it will be 156€ and 175€ for the 8750 (2.4 GHz). In comparison, the Core 2 Duo E6550 (2.33 GHz, 4 MB of L2 cache, 65nm) and E8200 (2.66 GHz 6 MB of L2 cache, 45nm) are found starting at 145€ and 165€, respectively.

So AMD isn’t being too revolutionary in terms of prices, but given its relatively precarious financial state, the company can ill afford to. In the meantime, this processor is not really a deal for gamers because the Core 2 Duo currently does a little better in games than the Phenom at equivalent frequencies.

     GeForce 9800 GTX: between 260€ and 300€

XFastest.com has published a series of slides from a presentation of the GeForce 9800 GTX.

Confirming specifications that were already published, they also give a relatively good idea of the price of the card at between 260€ and 300€ taxes included. This is as much or a little more than what the GeForce 8800 GTS 512 is currently found for; however, it isn’t too surprising given that the two cards resemble each other so much.

The 9800 GTX sets itself apart with slightly higher frequencies and a double SLI connector making it compatible with triple SLI. The card should arrive in stores starting March 25. We will just have to see if it manages to have higher performances than the aging 8800 GTX in DirectX 10 games in 1920x1200 and with FSAA 4x.

The triple core Phenom on its way

AMD has announced having carried out the first deliveries of its triple core Phenom. Dell and Hewlett Packard should therefore soon offer PCs equipped with this CPU, the Optilex 740 and AL195AW.

In both cases, they are destined for office PC s, characteristic of the Optilex and "Бизнес" (biznes) product lines. They are equipped with an L2 cache of 1.5 MB and an L3 cache of 2 MB. HP confirms the frequency of the Phenom 8600 at 2.3 GHz.

In terms of performances, the missing core compared to the Phenom 9xxx should not be felt too much in games for some time; however, there could be an impact in strongly multi-threaded applications. Finally, these processors are still based on the B2 revision and are therefore affected by the TLB bug.
