     GeCube X700 Pro 512 MB

After the 6800 Ultra and the X800 XL, it is now the X700 Pro turn to be released with 512 MB of video memory. Info-Tek has released this new GECUBE RADEON X700 Professional graphic card. Despite its name it is important to specify that the X700 Pro is one of ATI’s general public graphic chip.

The interest of such a graphic card, except for very specific needs, is small because of the CPU power. 512 Mb is only starting to be interesting with high end graphic cards, so with middle range products… we will still have to wait for one year and a half or two years.

During the CeBIT, we only saw a non functional version of the ASUSTeK bi GeForce 6800 Ultra. It seems that the product development has progressed and MyDrivers has published pictures of the graphic card in use equipped this time with two GeForce 6800 GT.

We don’t know yet anything about performances which should be identical to two separated graphic cards in SLI and we don’t know if it is capable of displaying a picture…but at least what we see here is that the fan LED lights up. The graphic card size is still as impressive...

Samsung 4 ms TN, 8 ms PVA, bad news

Samsung made a strong impression during the CeBit (see this news) with the announcement of several monitors that were very much ahead of their time. Unfortunately, today the reality is far different. Since the CeBit, ViewSonic (not even present at the event) has released the excellent VP191b, Fujitsu-Siemens has discreetly released the C19-4 and Iiyama has announced the next PVA 8 ms, the ProLite H1900. At Samsung, all monitors announced are else delayed or …on hold. Some might even be cancelled.

The most awaited, the SyncMaster 750P (6 ms response time, 1500:1 contrast ratio) would be only released now in September or October.

The 173Plus and 193Plus, unveiled in January won’t be released before August.

Finally the 930B (Samsung TN 4 ms) release is on hold. For the time being Samsung considers releasing first a 8ms versions which could be replaced a little bit later by a 4 ms panel. But there is no certainty and the 930B might just also disappear.

For the time being, Samsung is a little bit in the dark. We will know more this summer and there is still hope apparently for the release of a TN 4ms other than the 930B.

     HD-DVD capacity to 45GB

Toshiba today announced to have reached a capacity of 45 GB with a single HD-DVD disc. If the layer density is still 15 GB, the number of layers has been increased from 2 to 3. Tanks to this new capacity improvement the HD DVD catches up with the Blu-ray in terms of capacity. The Blu-ray capacity is up to 50 GB with two layers.

Toshiba has also progressed with hybrid discs. After the announcement in the beginning of the year of a media development including a 15 GB HD-DVD layer and a 4.7 GB DVD layer with Memory Tech, the company today announced one media with two sides. One with 2 HD-DVD layers (30 GB) and one with 2 DVD layers (8.5 GB).

These announcements will probably help Toshiba to try to find an agreement with Sony for the successor of the current DVD format.
