VIA and SiS are currently going through hard times. In the first half of 2007, revenue went down 35% and 50%, respectively, compared to the first half of last year. These poor performances are certainly in part related to the chipset price war that Intel and AMD are also taking part in. However, it’s also due to not meeting the objectives of these two Taiwanese manufacturers’ other components.
Despite the latest rumors, VIA has apparently decided to release at least desktop and portable versions of its next chipsets. As for SiS, their future looks a little more serene due to better relations with Intel. In the fourth quarter, they should release up to five versions (with and without integrated graphic circuits) of the SiS 680. The most complete, the SiS 680SCE, which is destined for Core 2 Duo FSB 1333 MHz processors, has a Mirage 4 graphic core, supports HDMI/HDCP, but is limited to DDR2-1066 memory. |
