     Turion A64 X2 65nm

    If the introduction in May of the Santa Rosa platform will strengthen a little bit more Intel's position for laptop computers, AMD will also release on the same dates the Turion 64 X2 TL-66. Quite close to existent models (2x512KB of L2 cache, TDP of 35 Watts), it will use 65nm fabrication process and will be clocked at 2.3 GHz. FYI, the TL-60 is clocked at 2GHz and use the 90 nm fabrication process. It will also support dual channel DDR2-800.

    Four models using the 65 nm fabrication process and intended to replace current models are also scheduled. This is the case of the TL-64 (2.2GHz & TDP of 35 Watts), TL-60 (2GHz & TDP of 31 Watts), TL-58 (1.9GHz & TDP of 31 Watts) and TL-56 (1.8GHz & TDP of 31 Watts, 2 watts less than the 90nm equivalent). We will have to wait for 2008 and the introduction of the Griffin, derived from the mobile core Barcelona, for AMD to really innovate in the notebook market. Up until this date, the Texan manufacturer will compete with Intel on this market with an aggressive price policy and sales of bundles of chipsets and processors to PC manufacturers.

    Despite the reservations expressed by several companies of the sector, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company officially announced the end of the test phase for 45 nm fabrication process and the beginning of production from September 2007. This announcement comes only two weeks after the publication of another press release about the arrival soon of circuits using the 55 nm fabrication process.

    As usual, the benefits in terms of costs per units produced, density, performances and dissipation are explicated. Now, despite the very optimistic figures (two times higher density compared to the 65 nm, higher frequencies etc.) published by TSMC to incite clients to choose the 45nm and the CyberShuttle program to reduce development costs faced by companies, the question of the real costs of the 45nm remains unanswered. Especially, if we take in account the R&D budget that is climbing excessively fast and the uncertain yields, at least in the beginning. Also, we are still waiting for the first high end GPU using the 65 nm fabrication process by TSMC. This process is in production since the end of 2005.



     Nvidia 7200 GS

    Nvidia will introduce soon a GeForce 7200 GS clocked at 450MHz core and 400MHz memory. This is in fact a new version of the G72 that already equips the 7300 GS and 7300 LE, respectively clocked at 550/405 and 450/333MHz.


    The strong points of this card are reduced to the possibility of using the Aero interface of Windows Vista at a lesser price, a passive cooling system and a small size. Even if it supports the Shader Models 3.0 and, unlike the 6200TC/7100GS that it will replace, the HDR, it isn't better than these cards or the Radeon X1050 (alias X300 aka X550) for games because of insufficient performances. Also, why choosing the name 7200 GS for a card "less slow" than the 7300 LE. Especially, since the latter should have been initially called 7200 GS. Isn't that simple?

    Once more, the modifications brought to the entry level only optimize the marketing position and do not bring real improvements to the user.



     XG Station opened up

    4Gamer.net has opened a XG Station, the station for graphic cards that connects to the laptop via ExpressCard slot. We noted that if we thought at first that a double slot graphic card could fit in, this isn't actually the case because of the presence of a fan that prevents the insertion of such cards.


    We remind you that the XG Station will be available before the end of the second quarter at 500€ approximately with one 7900 GS. It will also be available alone at an unknown price. If this solution might be of interest for owners of light laptops that do not feature powerful graphic solutions, we have to keep in mind that the PCI Express link for ExpressCard is only of type x1. Consequently, performances will be strongly reduced compared to a communication in x16. With 3DMark06, for example, the framerate will be divided by two. Of course, this is better than the Intel Extreme Graphics…



     GeForce 8600 & calculation power

    Logo NvidiaAccording to our colleagues of OCWorkbench, the GPU G84 of the GeForce 8600 GTS and GT will have 32 calculation units for pixels and vertex shadings instead of 128 for the 8800 GTX and 96 for the 8800 GTS.

    With the following frequencies, 1450 MHz for the GTS and 1180 MHz for the GT, their processing power will be clearly inferior. The 8800 GTS will be 2.5 times faster than the 8600 GT. The 8500 GT will only feature 16 units clocked at 900 MHz.

    The number of transistor of the 8600 will be of 289 million. This is 18 million more than the G71 of the GeForce 7900.
