Seagate have announced a new version of its Savvio, a high perrformance 2.5" hard drive for the enterprise segment. Designed mainly for servers and data centers, this drive has the features to interest the pro market.

The Savvio 10K.4 is available at 450 and 600 GB and therefore affords the highest capacities in its category – with the previous generation not exceeding 300 GB. It will therefore be possible to reduce the number of drives within servers, reducing costs and power consumption. Moreover, as a pro hard drive the MTBF has been announced at 2 million hours, which leaves a nice usage margin!

An auto-encryption option is also supported to secure the data written to the drive. At 10,000 rpm, the Savvio 10k4 has a response time of 3 milliseconds and speeds in the order of 140 MB/s continuous. The interfaces offered are the SAS 6 Gbps and the Fiber Channel 4 Gbps so no point buying one in the hope of building a high performance machine!

The Savvio 10K.4 is guaranteed for 5 years but no information on pricing has been given by Seagate yet, though of course it’s likely to be going at a premium.

ATI launches Radeon 5550 on the quiet

The ATI DirectX 11 range continues to grow. After the 5450 and the 5570, ATI have launched the Radeon HD 5550 very much on the quiet. This card is based on the same GPU as the 5570 but with much lower performance.

The GPU clock has dropped from 650 to 550 MHz and the number of stream processors is down from 400 to 320. The GDDR3-1800 has been replaced with DDR2-800. In the end, you get something quite different from the 5570 with performances likely to be very mediocre at best.

The Avivo HD could save the day if you omit the fact that, unless you can’t do any gaming, the 5450 also decodes HD video…This card has obviously been designed for OEMs, which explains why ATI haven’t had much to say about it.
