In addition to the G-Monster SATA mini SSD, PhotoFast has also announced an SSD drive with a new Jmicron controller, the JMF612. The V5J gives very good theoretical performance: 240 MB/s for read and 200 MB/s for write for the 32, 64, 128 and 256 GB versions. They use MLC flash memory and the cache is 256 MB for all versions. No price has yet been announced for these 2.5" drives that use the SATA 3 GB/s interface. PhotoFast is still selling the V5 range which is similar but with Indilinx controllers and notably higher speeds.

Photofast announced the G-Monster range of eSATA keys back in April . Although the speeds announced were mouthwatering, the fact that the product didn’t support Power Over eSATA was regrettable, especially as Pretec had announced such a product a little time before. This gap has since been filled thanks to the Mini SATA SSD, a very compact key that uses the eSATA port both for data and power. It measures 24.95x39.3x6.57mm and will be available in several flavours: between 2 and 32 GB of SLC memory or between 4 and 64 GB of MLC memory. The tech spec is not yet available model by model and PhotoFast is giving 100 MB/s read speeds and 70 MB/s writes for the range, less than the G-Monsters then. These tiny keys remain a mouthwatering prospect all the same. Their price has not yet been given.

About a year ago, Rambus pursued NVIDIA for violation of 17 patents. The affair followed its course until the beginning of June and the US Patent and Trademark Office finally rejected 41 counts concerning 7 patents. Having apparently got over their moment of madness, Rambus’ lawyers have removed their claim and even recognised that there had been no violation of their patents by NVIDIA. A happy ending then for the nth claim made by Rambus on the subject of its more or less real patents on memory controllers. |

AMD has just cut the prices of its Radeon HD 4870 and 4890 by about fifty dollars. The 1 GB Radeon 4890 will now be available for €179, the 512 MB Radeon 4870 for €129 and the 512 MB Radeon 4850 for €89. Let’s see what, if any, reaction will come from NVIDIA.
