     Pennryn and ASUSTeK compatibility

ASUSTeK has put a page on-line listing its motherboards that are compatible with future Intel Penryn processors, which, as you may recall, are an evolution of current Core 2 Duos and Quads. Amongst other things, the main differences are that they will be engraved in 45nm, there is now an L2 cache of 6 MB, and there are some architectural improvements.

In addition to P35 and G33 Express motherboards, which are logically compatible, there is also the P965 and therefore P5Bs as well as the nForce 680i and 650i. Some 975x destined for workstations are compatible, however, for the moment the P5W-DH unfortunately isn't on the list.

So here is some very good news for those who own listed motherboards. This is all the more true, because up until recently, besides material modification, we thought that only recent models based on the P35 would be compatible. Let`s hope that other manufacturers will also publish lists in the same spirit in the next couple of weeks.

SPD-Z: OCZ to get rid of the bios and SLI Memory

OCZ has unveiled SPD-Z technology, which without being revolutionary on the technical level, because it`s been possible for some time now, could turn out to be a good idea. Morevover, it`s in the process of being patented.

The principle is rather simple consisting of allowing the user to change the firmware of DDR modules. You may recall, the SPD is a small memory on modules which gives the module`s specifications. In pratice, EEPROM is flashed by using a utility with a new firmware. Therefore, this allows the modification of certain memory settings independently of the bios and motherboard. For example, depending on motherboard or even the FSB, it will be possible to optimally set the SPD in order to improve performances and/or stability.

The first beta version is already available on this company's forum and it promises weekly updates. Given the extremely high number of possible OCZ memory/motherboard combinations, this will only really be functional if final users become involved and give feedback in order to develop adequate firmware, which will also benefit others. Participation is therefore a crucial element, and it`s not by chance that this project was launched on a forum. Finally, note that using SPD-Z doesn`t change the warranty.
