January: a busy month for Intel

According to information from several colleagues, the month of January will feature the following groups of processors which will all be dual cores :

The 6th and the day before the start of the CES, they will release its new line of mobile CPUs:

You may recall, the X9000 is a Core 2 Extreme while the Txx00 is part of the Core 2 Duo family.

The 20th will be for desktop processors:

The E1200 will be the first dual core Celeron. Given its TDP, it’s likely that it will still be based on a Conroe core (65nm) unlike all the others which are derived from the Wolfdale core (45nm). As for the Yorkfield (a.k.a. quad core Penryns), we’ll have to wait a few more weeks.

     ASRock recycles the nForce3 & M1695

Some manufacturers like to offer low priced products in exchange for integrating whatever they feel like just as long as they can obtain a good price. This motherboard manufacturer has just launched the AliveDual eSATA2 equipped with an M1695 chipset serving as the Northbridge and an nForce3 250 as the Southbridge.

We find this hard to understand because the latter is composed of a single chip that regroups all functions. It dates from March 2004 and doesn’t support PCI-Express, contrary to the M1695 which also natively supports AGP 8X, although it’s the nForce3 that has this role here.

Note that ULI was acquired by Nvidia at the end of 2005 and two years after it has managed to unload the last stocks all while finding a solution to the penury of adequate Southbridges. Moreover, there has been no loss of integrity because motherboards support the very recent Phenom X4 as well as SATA-II...via an additional controller.

GeForce 8800 GT: a revised cooling system

Nvidia has already revised the reference single slot cooling system of the GeForce 8800 GT.

There is no major change except the diameter of the fan is now 75 mm instead of the previous 65 mm. This should improve its efficiency and hopefully allow the reduction of fan speed so that it will be more silent.
