AMD must double its market share

AMD has undertaken new legal action against its long standing rival Intel. It adds to the lawsuit filed in June of 2005 in which the creator of the Athlon has since received some 200 million pages of documents from Intel and its clients.

On both sides, there is the usual rhetoric of Intel saying the CPU market is still competitive while its rival accuses it of excluding it (or practically) from the market. Either way, there was one interesting point in that AMD’s lawyers estimate that the Sunnyvale company has to more than double its market share (which was 13% at the end of 2007) in order to exist in the long run.

Without taking sides, we can wonder what exactly Intel means by "competitive market" given that the flagship processor in AMD’s line, the Phenom 9850 Black Edition, has performances that are inferior to those of the aging Q6600 and also given the respective market shares.

Otherwise, in other news AMD’s stock has risen roughly 8% (after a peak of 10% yesterday) following rumors circulating on the restructuring plan which should soon be announced. This may involve dividing the company into 2 or 3 entities, one handling production and the other(s) design.

ASUS Splendid : MXM for the desktop

ASUS seems to really like the Radeon HD 3850 in MXM format because after having launched the EAH3850 Trinity which takes three daughter cards, the Taiwanese manufacturer is now offering the Splendid MA3850M, a mono GPU solution.

The RV670 is set at 668 MHz and with the accompanying 512 MB set at 828 MHz, performances should be close to those of reference card’s. Compared to the latter, the immediate advantage of the Splendid is that it will be 27% shorter (17cm versus the usual 23.3cm) which makes it the ideal card for small casings. Moreover, its creator indicates that the modular design will enable easy upgrades in the future. Either way, in reality these MXM cards equipped with higher performance GPUs will have to be offered at an attractive price in order that they be of interest.

     GeForce Release 175.16: Hybrid SLI

Logo NvidiaYesterday, Nvidia published the GeForce Release 175.16 Beta for 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows XP and Vista. The main innovation is of course support of the nForce 780a SLI, 750a SLI, 730a and 720a as well as the GeForce 8300, 8200 and 8100. Also, there is the introduction of Hybrid SLI or more precisely GeForce Boost with the GeForce 8400 GS and 8500 GT in addition to HybridPower with the GeForce 9800 GTX and 9800 GX2 – at least if these GPUs are combined with one of the above chipsets.

It’s been somewhat of a tradition to officially improve performances in numerous DirectX 9, DirectX 10 and OpenGL applications. This time various bugs are fixed essentially with SLI configurations, notably involving STALKER with two GeForce 8600 GTs. As is often the case, all GeForce 6-7-8-9 are supported in both OS while the FX is only supported in Windows XP. You can download it here!
