     Intel attacks UMPC market

If the performances of Intel 's current solutions for Ultra mobile PC, the Celeron M (core Dothan ULV) with 915GMS+ICH6 chipsets, are clearly superior to the VIA C7-M - CX700M duo, the latter requires a much smaller surface than its Californian rival: 1847.25mm² instead of 2915mm². Now, for UMPC the surface criterion can be decisive.

The Santa Clara giant seems to have realized that this could be a problem and announced the release at IDF (held in Beijing) of the McCaslin platform. This platform will enable the manufacturer to better meet the requirements of UMPC manufacturers and of their clients while providing high enough performances to support Windows Vista Premium.

The processor (codenamed Stealey) will be clocked at 600MHz and 800MHz. It will have 512KB of L2 cache, will use 90nm fabrication process and embed a new energy saving technology named Deeper Sleep Support (C4). The northbridge Little River will include the graphic core and be connected to an ICH7-M. The total surface occupied by this trio will be around 975 mm² and it will have a much higher autonomy (4 to 5 hours instead of 2 to 3 previously).

For the second quarter 2008, Intel would be planning the release of the Menlow platform with a processor using 45 nm fabrication process and a single chipset. Finally, in 2009, a third platform with a processor including memory controller and northbridge will be out. Intel would even be planning on having 12 hours of autonomy but hasn't specified which battery it will use.

Hitachi has released in Japan the Hitachi Desktar 7K1000, a new SATA hard drive with a storage capacity of one Terabyte. Spinning at 7200RPM, it has 32MB of cache, respectively 8.5ms and 9.2ms read/write access time (14ms and 15 ms with noise level management activated), a maximum transfer rate of 133,75MB/sec and a reasonable access noise level of 32 dBA. The price of this new product is, however, a bit less reasonable since it is be close to 410€ VAT included. We have to hope that the release of equivalent models by competitors will change this point. For example, Seagate has scheduled the release of a hard drive of 1 TB before the end of June.
