     Unrestraining the GeForce 6800 !

GeForce 6800As you know, the GeForce 6800 and 6800LE's performances are restricted by NVIDIA which has deactivated some units: else one or a quad engine (group of four pipelines) with one or several vertex shader units. This procedure allows NVIDIA to use partly defective chips. For example if a chip has one defective pipeline, they just need to deactivate one quad engine and sell it as a 12 functional pipeline instead of 16. This procedure creates new cards following the market requirements. Some fully functional chips can also have performances restriction. Also, a chip might not go through NVIDIA’s quality tests but not shows any specific trouble in use.

So it is tempting to imagine activating the deactivated units and it is now possible! The Riva Tuner creator, at the origin of the same operation for ATI, has released the RC15.1 version of this software which allows you to activate or deactivate your graphic cards units. Of course these units might not work when activated...but you have to test them to get to the bottom of it!

The only problem is that some of the GeForce 6800 have hardware restrictions. So in order to verify if your card is « softmodable », you have too check via the Riva Tuner diagnositic module that the bios doesn’t send back: 16x1,6vp for the GPU Unit Mask line. First go to Customize in « Target Adaptater » then « Graphics Subsystem Diagnostic Report », tick the box « NVIDIA VGA Bios information » and finally « Capture current report ».

If your graphic card is softmodable, you have to go to the NVStrap Driver via Target adaptateur / Customize configuration. Then tick every masked unit, reboot… and test if the system is working. Good luck to everyone!
