     Computex : AMD vs Intel

Tension between the two main rivals in CPU manufacturing was clearly noticeable at this Computex, AMD probably being the more aggressive. The number 2 attacked its competitor on several fronts, for example, claiming that Intel’s packaging must not contain anything too interesting for them to talk so much about 45 nm. Or concerning Intel’s massively multicore CPUs, AMD said that it’s time that Intel’s marketing stopped selling products that are useless to consumers.

It may be true that the 45 nm process does not add any direct advantages and Intel’s massively multicore projects remain prototypes giving Intel lots to talk about. However, it seems that the clear advantage Intel has in R&D greatly annoys AMD, who has lesser means and must concentrate on projects that are more commercially solid.

AMD or Intel ? Even for refreshments, you might want to choose a side.

Toshiba chose the Computex to unveil the first HD-DVD burner in slim format for laptops, developed by its Taiwanese branch, TDMT (Toshiba Digital Media Network Taiwan). It’s capable of burning single layer HD-DVDs in 2x and all other HD-DVDs (including rewritable ones) in 1x. On the other hand, we will have to be happy with 4x for single layer DVDs and 16x for CDs. Toshiba didn’t give us any information on the final price, but indicated that major manufacturers of portable computers will receive the first samples in the beginning of July so that they will be available at the end of summer.
