DailyTech has published AMD's roadmap for Opteron processors featuring some 21 models clocked from 1.9 GHz to 2.6 GHz, all with AMD Virtualization and Barcelona cores. We remind you that the Barcelona has four cores, each of them equipped with 512 LB of L2 cache and 2MB of shared L3 cache.
The Sunnyvale chip company keeps the spirit of the current nomenclature and maintains the series 1xxx, 2xxx and 8xxx, respectively intended for mono, bi and quadri/octo processors configurations, the SE denomination for high end models with high TDPs (120 Watts) and HE for low power consumption models (68 Watts). Standard models dissipate up to 95 Watts.
The first products will be launched in the beginning of the year. There will be three standard 2xxx and three 8xxx clocked at 2,1GHz, 2,2GHz and 2,3GHz. Other products are scheduled to be released up until the second quarter 2008.
The last two series are similar except for the number of processors supported. They use the Socket F and are limited the HyperTransport 1.0 bus and DDR2 667MHz registered memory.
The series 1xxx is designed to work with AM2 and AM2+ socket and this is the reason why it can also use the HyperTransport 3.0 bus. However, despite having asked the question several times to AMD, the manufacturer hasn't yet confirmed the compatibility with the AM2 currently in shops. The 1xxx also accepts unregistered DDR2 800MHz memory, but it won't be available in HE version and the frequency of this processor will be limited to 2.5 GHz.

If we are no longer surprised by the existence of SLi or Crossfire memory, which are purely making denominations, OCZ has gone even further and introduced the PC2-6400 Vista Performance Gold Dual Channel memory kit as "designed to specifically address the needs of Gamers taking advantage of DirectX 10".
This isn't worst than the two branding campaigns led by NVIDIA and ATI with memory manufacturers, but suggesting that this memory is best to play with DirectX 10 is quite a dangerous shortcut. It is indeed true that, because of the recommendations made by Microsoft of 1 GB of RAM memory with Windows vista, 4 GB will become more and more common for high end configurations and that DirectX 10 is an exclusivity of windows vista.
However, it is likely that 4 GB of memory will not be really useful to play DirectX 10 games within the next 18 months and implicitly associating Microsoft's new API to the conception of a new memory module is quite strange.
This kit features two DDR2-800 / PC2-6400 modules of 2GB certified to function with timings of 5-5-5-18 at 2.0V. |
