PhysX competition: win a contract with NV

For several weeks now, we have witnessed a strong return of PhysX which has been proclaimed as "the hottest game technology to hit the streets in years" by Nvidia and The Game Creators.

The two companies have therefore decided to organize a competition for young game developers to show their skills with the use of PhysX. Not only are the prizes interesting (GeForce GTX 200, 9800 GTX and nForce 790i), but also for the most talented, there should be employment contracts with Nvidia.

For those who are tempted, there are two categories: the Feature demo & Über demo with deadlines fixed for July 20th and 31st, respectively. The main criteria (use PhyX features, complexity/performance, visual aspect, user interaction and size) are available on this page. Moreover, those competing will get feedback from TGC and Nvidia during the entire development process. So more than ever, support to developers seems to be of big interest to the firm with the green chameleon logo.

Price of DDR2 over the last 18 months

Here is the price of DDR2 64 and 128 MB chips in dollars as we have recorded them these last 18 months on Dramexchange.

As you can see, prices have been stable in 2008 compared to collapses in 2007. Consumers can only be satisfied with the current market; however, manufacturers are impatiently waiting for prices to rise which has not yet happened. This is understandable given their financial results compared to last year.

For example, Qimonda (ex-Infineon) showed 412 million Euros in sales for the first quarter and a 482 million loss compared to 984 million in revenue and 57 million in profits a year ago. Also, a year ago, Elpida had 144.2 million dollars in sales for 8.5 million in profits while this year gross revenue reached 90.4 million for a loss of 29.2 million.

Last year, Hitachi already indicated that it planned on attaining 4 TB in 2011 on 3"1/2 drives with the help of its CPP-GMR (Current Perpendicular to the Plane Giant Magnetoresistance) technology which enables a strong increase in the surface density of drives.

Today the manufacturer now says that it has improved CPP-GMR technology so well that it will be possible to reach 1 TB per square inch in 2010 allowing 5 TB on a classic drive. The first models equipped with CPP-GMR should appear next year and will have 2.5 times the capacities of current drives, or in other words 2.5 TB. This is something that ought to allow Hitachi to catch up as it is the only one to still be limited to 200 GB platters while the competition uses 333 GB platters on certain models.
