     GeForce 9M family: be careful!

According to VR-Zone, the GeForce 9 Mobile line should resemble the following:

In addition, we should add the GeForce 9300M G and 9500M GS which are respectively based on the G86 and G84.

As marketing obliges, there is no automatic relation between the GPU and final name of the product (and quite the contrary!). In practice, this can mean that performance differences can be bigger between two cards with almost identical names than models that appear largely unrelated.

In short, many buyers may opt for laptops which have significantly lower performances than expected. Unfortunately, this is something relatively common in the world of notebooks where GPU and/or memory frequencies can be much less than those officially recommended by manufacturers eager to please OEMs. Otherwise, we can see that the G94 which equips the desktop GeForce 9600 have been promoted to the level of GeForce 9700 or 9800.

Finally, for some GeForce 9700Ms as well as for the 96x0M and 9500M G, we find the G96 while for the entry level there is the G98.

     Seagate: 320 GB per platter

Seagate has unveiled the new Barracuda 7200.11 with a capacity of 320 GB which is attained with a single platter. The maximum sustained sequential speed of this 7200 rpm drive is 115 MB /s versus 105 MB /s for the other 7200.11 and the average latency time increases slightly to 4.17 (+0.1). As for sound levels, they are down to 25 dBA in Idle and at 26 in rotation.

You may recall that two weeks ago Western Digital announced its first drive equipped with 320 GB platters, the WD Caviar SE16 640 GB (WD6400AAKS) and that the Samsung SpinPoint F1 uses 320 to 333 GB platters for its 320, 640 and 1 TB versions (the others use 250 GB).
