     VIA stops making chipsets

According to Apply Daily, VIA will integrate its System Platform division which handles chipsets for other processor manufacturers to its CPU Platform division which works on the development of C7 processors and adequate supports (the northbridge and motherboards).

More precisely, this means that VIA will definitively stop producing chipsets for AMD and Intel processors. Due to a strong demand for Intel chipsets, VIA has not totally abandoned its talks with the Santa Clara giant to obtain a license allowing it to offer chipsets that support an FSB superior to 1066 MHz. But either way this would not have a significant impact on the Taiwanese manufacturer’s results.

Information relative to the GeForce 9600 GT has tended to multiply these past few days.

This mid-range GPU (the D9P) engraved in 65m should offer performances noticeably superior to those of the GeForce 8600 GTS (Nvidia mentions gains of up to 90%) as the number of calculation units and bus width has been doubled. This represents an increase to 64 scalar processors and a 256 bit memory controller.

On the other hand, there is much uncertainty concerning frequencies. For the GPU, some sources mention figures varying between 500 and 650 MHz and 900 MHz for the 512 MB of memory. In terms of functionalities and APIs, we are still limited to DirectX 10.0 but OpenGL 2.1 will be supported. The price of these cards should be around 200-250€ and arrival is expected on February 14.

Crucial arrives on the SSD market

Lexar Media, subsidiary of the memory manufacturer Micron, has unveiled two SSDs in 2" ½ format that will be sold under the brand name Crucial.

With a capacity of 32 or 64 GB, they have an SATA-II interface and reading/writing speeds of 100 and 45 MB /s. The announced consumption is less than 2 watts when functioning. This last characteristic is probably due to the use of multi-level Flash NAND (MLC) which is less expensive than simple level Flash NAND (SLC). Arrival is expected this quarter for a price that we hope is reasonable for this type of product.

[H]ardocp has published photos of a card that is supposed to be a GeForce 9800 GX2.

It will be equipped with two GPUs engraved in 65nm (G92?) each with 128 scalar processors and fitted onto their own distinct PCB. They will be combined with 1 GB of memory (2x 512 MB). This will enable them to have at least 30% higher performances than a GeForce 8800 Ultra and will mark the return of Quad SLI. The launch should take place at the end of February or beginning of March while the price remains unknown.
