After Qimonda and Hynix, it’s now Samsung’s turn to unveil its GDDR5 memory. While the size of chips are only 512 Mbits (64 MB) when those of Hynix attain the Gb (128 MB), the South Korean manufacturer announces a bandwidth of 24 GB /s which corresponds to a frequency of 3 GHz while its competitors do not go beyond 2.5 GHz. In addition, voltage is 1.5V while GDDR3 usually requires 1.8V.
In terms of availability, the main creators of graphic processors have already received samples and mass production should start in the first half of 2008. At any rate, no one doubts that GDDR5 should be more successful than GDDR4.
