Our colleague from x86-secret has just released a very interesting article on the DFI 855GME-MGF, a Micro ATX card for Pentium M and Celeron M equipped with an AGP port.
Performance obtained are quite impressive as the Pentium M 2 GHz (755) is most of the time as fast as a Pentium 4 3.6 GHz for games. With WinRAR results are also equivalent, but with the POVRay software (used to create three-dimensional graphics) this processor is slower and needs to be clocked at 2.25 GHz to have equivalent performances to a P4 3.2 GHz. Other results are based on synthetic bench or as they say applicative but we prefer not analysing them.
Once overclocked at 2.55 GHz and without increasing the voltage, the Pentium M also has excellent results and sometime is even faster than a Athlon 64 4000+ with games. Of course other processor can be overclocked but with smaller margins of progression.
Also the main interest of the Pentium M is that is doesn’t excessively warm up and has a reduced electrical consumption. The Pentium 4 requires now more than 100 Watts but the Pentium M barely reach 30 Watts. With these new results we might ask ourselves if Intel made the right choice by continuing on the Desktop market with their Pentium 4. Anyway, the release of such a card on the market should please more than one user!
