Hitachi has announced the release of a 500 GB 2.5" hard drive with an SATA 3 GB/s interface. Designed for notebooks, this 7200 rpm drive should be energy efficient, with Hitachi having announced consumption at 0.69 watts on standby and 1.8 watts when reading/writing. The TravelStar 7K500 also has DBE encryption technology. When this option is activated, the hard drive encodes all the data that comes from the system when written on the drive. When in read mode, the drive decodes the data so that the system can understand it. This operation is not supposed to have any impact on system performance as it is all managed by the drive controler.

The Travelstar 7K500 will be widely available as of this month with capacities of 120 GB, 160 GB, 250 GB and 500 GB. As of November, Hitachi will also be selling its new drive in an EA – Enhanced Availability – version with capacities from 160 to 500 GB.

The American company Kanguru has announced an eSATA flash drive with a Power Over eSATA interface. This means it doesn’t need any additional power supply. Kanguru supplies an eSATA bracket with the key that you can, if need be, connect to an SATA port in your motherboard. So as to conserve compatability, the key also has a USB2.0 connection. Tests carried out on the net reveal max write speeds of 45 MB/s and reads of 75 MB/s. The Kanguru e-Flash is 89x24x7mm high and weighs 22 grams and is available in 32 and 64 GB versions at $119.95 and $199.95 respectively.
