Due to the success of flash memory and more specifically the arrival of new manufacturers on the SSD market, the market for small sized hard drives destined for ultra portable laptops and certain electronic devices has lost interest.
In consequence, Fujitsu which was planning on launching mini hard drives has finally backed out. Its compatriot Hitachi also decided to pull out, the production of 1" drives has already stopped and the 1.8" will have a similar fate in a few months. The company will now concentrate on its 2" ½ and 3" ½ drives.
According to estimations from iSuppli, they currently control 17% of this niche market and far behind Toshiba and its 70% share. Samsung and Seagate have a respective 8% and 5%. We can only hope that these last two don’t make the same decision.
